About

Welcome! — British by birth, Swiss by choice. I was born in England and grew up on Hayling Island in the south. I left England when I was 25 years old and began the next stage of my career in Switzerland. There are many things I loved from the start: the mountains and lakes, the focus on precision and social responsibility, the mix of cultures and languages, and the location in Europe. I can reach Germany and France in under an hour, both Lichtenstein and Italy are less than half a day.

My passions are music, sport and travel.

I'm so happy you are here. Send me your mail address in the form below and I will reply, and we can start to connect.

Music

Music is my greatest passion.

The band I play the most music with is called ROCK66 — rock66.ch

Sport

Sport is my other greatest passion!

Football

For many years I played football, first in England and then in Switzerland. In Zurich I played for a team called SRO Oerlikon where half the team were Italians. After the trainer of the team left I took over his role and as the Englishman in the team I had to coach the Swiss and Italian players. This was a fascinating challenge looking back on it and a wonderful cultural experience.

Since those days I've played for many different teams and these days, taking care of knees and other essential body parts, I do not play competitively any more. My most recent engagement was training a local team aged 9 and 10.

Ski

In the tiny village of Mürren I had my first ski lessons. This was one of my favourite experiences in Switzerland so far. Since then I've skied all over the country under all possible conditions. These days my favourite places to ski are mainly in the canton of Wallis / Valais.

Snowboard

The steep learning curve was mainly caused by the feet being fixed, moving the balance function to other muscles, and the weather. Under sunny skies and new snow it's a lot easier. Once I learned how to do it my knee did not allow me to continue. Perhaps I can restart sometime…

Mountaineering

I feel very passionate and very fortunate to be able to do this. I learned the skills in Wales when I was a teenager. My 4,000m peaks are:

  • Mt. Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia
  • Allainhorn, Saas-Fee
  • Alphubel, Saas-Fee
  • Weissmies, Saas-Grund

One exciting way to climb mountains here with the minimum administration work is the rich number of Via Ferrata or Klettersteige in Switzerland.

Hiking

Looking back I have probably covered more kilometres hiking than any other sport. Hundreds, maybe even thousands.

Running

I had to stop my running activities after a knee operation. In 2025 I found that I could run distances again. The motivation for me was the Mattmark Memorial race and its 60th anniversary. It was so cool to be up at 2,000m and run the 8 km around the lake.

Racing Bike

Another sport with thousands of km behind me. The two longest rides so far were around the lakes of Geneva (Lac Léman) and Neuchâtel. The highest pass I managed so far was a section of the Tour de France called Col de Joux.

Mountain Bike

One of life's great pleasures — heading out into the hills and mountains, being immersed in nature.

Touring Bike

A great way to travel, and Europe provides so many river routes to follow with maximum flexibility around routes, distances and cultural highlights.

Swimming

I learned to swim in the sea on the coast of England and I love beaches. Swimming in Australia with its endless supply of pristine beaches has been one of the best experiences so far, followed by the beaches in places like Sipadan, Borneo. Even the West Coast of Scotland gave me some hot beaches one year to swim from.

Tennis

At one time this was my main sport after football. I was a member of a club in Zurich and played competitions in Ticino.

Badminton

A great sport in winter and an excellent compensation for long days in the office.

Squash

It was never my favourite sport but I found it a great way to keep fit in the minimum amount of time.

Ice Hockey

At one company I worked for I had the opportunity to try this. It's fun but you have to skate well to do it. I don't skate well.

Travel

Travel opens the mind.

My best experiences so far:

  • The Blues Trail through GA, TN, MS, LA
  • The US Great Circle through the Canyon National Parks
  • The jungles of Sarawak and the Orang-utan rehabilitation center in Sarawak
  • Diving off Sipadan
  • PADI certificate in Port Douglas
  • PADI Shark Specialty in the Maldives
  • Australia from Brisbane to Sydney
  • Australia from Exmouth to Albany
  • Australia — Kangaroo Island
  • Cruise around Chile, Patagonia, Falkland Islands, Rio, Buenos Aires, Montevideo
  • Scotland's West Coast and the Outer Hebrides
  • The Greek Islands
  • Florida and the Keys
  • And many, many more beautiful places on this precious planet
